There are different types of editing that you might need for your work, depending on what you’re writing, your starting point and where you want your piece of work to end up. These include substantial editing (including major rewriting), copyediting (to check that your writing reads well and is clear) and proofreading (checking for spelling and grammar mistakes and inconsistencies). I offer copyediting and proofreading.
If you are unsure which of these services you need, please feel free to send a sample of your work and I will recommend whichever I think is best. If you request a proofread but I feel that your work would benefit from a copyedit, I will discuss with you whether you want to upgrade to a copyedit or stick with a proofread. This may depend on your budget, time constraints and the purpose of the writing. Likewise if you request a copyedit but I find that all you need is a proofread, I will advise you of this and only charge you the proofreading rate.
Copyediting is there to make sure that what you’ve written reads well and makes sense to the reader. It includes looking at sentence structure, rewording sentences that sound repetitive and ensuring that what you’ve written is what you intended to write. It also includes all aspects of proofreading.
Proofreading is there to pick up on all the small errors in punctuation, spelling and consistency (for example checking that all of your headings are formatted in the same way throughout).
